Dear Readers,

After the quiet summer we are coming up with a new fresh issue of our Bridging the Gap Newsletter. For the very first time we focus on a late summer hot topic – Raising Awareness in Sustainable Transportation. The latest and most exciting awareness campaigns are included in this special issue. Additionally we would like you to spring into action: we wish to improve our website and newsletter and, for this purpose, we have prepared a short questionnaire. Please take a few minutes to fill it out. We are looking forward to your feedback on how we can best meet your needs. Enjoy this special issue.

‘Bridging the Gap: Pathways for Transport in the Post 2012 Process’ is an initiative of GIZ, TRL, UITP, ITDP and Veolia Transdev created to tackle Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from land transport and to integrate this major contributor to climate change into the international climate negotiation process. We encourage you to help us to spread this information widely.

Dear Readers,

Opinions about the success of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development differ. While environmental associations consider Rio+20 as a failure, the Parties are more optimistic. They were able to agree on a joint document stating the importance of green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. From the transport perspective the Rio+20 Conference heads for the right direction. Sustainable Transport made it on the international Agenda (see Article) and the Worlds Development Banks pledge $175 billion for the creation of bicycle lanes, for pedestrians and public transport.
Prior to the Rio+20 Conference the Bonn Climate Talks took place. BtG has been on the spot and reported regularly from Bonn. Therefore we offer comprehensive information on our popular side event "Designing a successful Transport NAMA".

Dear Readers,

Time is passing fast until Rio+20. In less than 8 weeks the world will come together in Rio to discuss an effective strategy to make development more sustainable. Twenty years after the first meeting in Rio two topics are in the focus of the conference:  a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and the institutional framework for sustainable development. Preparing this event is one of the main tasks for the delegations coming to Bonn from the 14th - 25th of May for the Bonn Climate Change Conference 2012. BtG and its partners will be on the spot with an exhibition and a side event. Find more information about this in our 3rd issue of Land Transport and Climate Change Newsletter.

Dear Readers,

All the partners wish you a very happy 2012!

In this newsletter on transport and climate change we put the focus on the past 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) in Durban, South Africa. The ‘Bridging the Gap’ Initiative was actively present at the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference with a stand and several official side events. Although the COP17 did not constitute a major breakthrough, Durban delivered a number of key decisions, including the Ad-hoc Working Group on the “Durban Platform for Enhanced Action” (AWG-DPEA). The Initiative has produced the Durban Report, which analyses the conference’s key outcomes from a land transport sector perspective. The report was released at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 91st Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. Moreover, we look back at other interesting side events that covered transport and climate change.
